‘Half the tree of life’: ecologists’ horror as nature reserves are emptied of insects
A new point in history has been reached, entomologists say, as climate-led species’ collapse moves up the food chain even in supposedly protected regions free of pesticides.

They include in Germany, where flying insects across 63 insect reserves dropped 75% in less than 30 years; the US, where beetle numbers dropped 83% in 45 years; and Puerto Rico, where insect biomass dropped up to 60-fold since the 1970s. These declines are occurring in ecosystems that are otherwise protected from direct human influence.
[---8<---]
At one research centre – falling within a 22,000-hectare (85 sq mile) stretch of intact forest in Panama – scientists comparing current bird numbers with the 1970s found 70% of species had declined, and 88% of these had lost more than half of their population
.

As the insects die off, everything that eats them -- birds, amphibians, reptiles, etc. -- suffers a decline also.

I don't really have a lot to write about today. Two more members of BTS were discharged from the military today, and it happened while I was in a Korean class meeting online, so suddenly people were in the text chat exclaiming "IT'S HAPPENED!" and "THEY'RE FREE!" in the middle of our class. lol. Only one member of the band is still waiting for discharge, which should happen within the next 2 weeks. And then there will be much rejoicing!

One of the band members, Kim Namjoon (김남준), has been very frank about how miserable he was while in the military. The others have been quieter about their experience.

I'm going to start saving my money toward concert tickets. I'm sure they'll all need some time to relax, recover, and readjust to civilian life, but I also know they all really enjoy performing and will want to tour as soon as they can. I've talked with my friend Ginny who lives on Oahu, and we're hoping to finally go to a concert together. She invited me to come with her to Las Vegas when they were performing there a couple years ago, but I didn't have enough money for the flights. This time I'm determined to have enough money for concert tickets and flights!

I've been continuing to feel stressed/anxious, but I'm trying really hard to manage it without Valium. I just hate feeling so sedated! It would be much easier if I was able to go for walks on my own without waiting for a ride! I find solitary walks very calming. But my knee isn't up to that quite yet. Yesterday my knee started hurting just from our shopping excursion in town. It's so frustrating!

But I'm hopeful that the water exercise class will help. I've dropped one of my weekly Korean classes and moved one of my weekly study groups to a different day, so that I'll have time to go to the Y without stressing myself out more.

Shannon and I are planning a trip to Honolulu to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary in August, and I'm hoping to be able to walk around more while we're there! Waikiki is pretty flat, but there are some hills in the surrounding areas. I'm hoping we'll get to go to some museums, some nice restaurants, maybe even swim in the ocean a bit together, since I believe the water is pretty safe in some places there. We might see a movie, too. A few days in the big city will be fun!

Hard Things

Life is full of things which are hard or tedious or otherwise unpleasant that need doing anyhow. They help make the world go 'round, they improve skills, and they boost your sense of self-respect. But doing them still kinda sucks. It's all the more difficult to do those things when nobody appreciates it. Happily, blogging allows us to share our accomplishments and pat each other on the back.

What are some of the hard things you've done recently? What are some hard things you haven't gotten to yet, but need to do? Is there anything your online friends could do to make your hard things a little easier?

I went strawberry picking over the weekend with my family. Here are some of my potential plans for the berries that I carted back to Boston.

1. Oatmeal topping! I did this yesterday and today. Tomorrow, I might mix in some banana and/or peanut butter as well.

2. Lemonade flavoring!

3. Cupcakes! I am thinking of filling the cakes with lemon curd that I made a few weeks ago, and using the strawberries to flavor the icing.

4. Bread pudding!

5. PIES. Maybe I'll combine the strawberries with peaches or rhubarb.

Do you like strawberries? What are some of your favorite ways to use them?

For folks following RFK Jr's attacks on healthcare and public health, you may know that yesterday he dismissed ALL 17 MEMBERS of the CDC's vaccine advisory committee. He intends to replace them, almost certainly, with people who will go along with his antivax agenda. Public comment is open now for this committee's next meeting. Here are instructions, talking points, and a sample comment folks can feel free to share: Tell the CDC: We Need Broad Access to Vaccines and Science-Based Expert Advisory Committees (by Precaution on Substack)

Public comment to CDC ACIP vaccine committee opened on 6/9, and closes 6/20 at 11:59pm EDT . If you think that sounds bafflingly short, that’s because it is. The current regime changed the rules for public comment periods and didn’t tell anybody, probably to make it sound like the public are less invested in politics than previous administrations, and prop up the illusion of confidence in this regime. 🤬🤬🤬 Fuck THAT noise!

Refugees

CEO invites the world to invest in refugees: 'Humanity flourishes when people have the tools to succeed'

“One in 10 of us will be displaced in 25 years. One in 10. Each of us is more likely to be displaced than ever before,” Oyler said in her TED Talk, which will be published at a later date.

“The time for incremental change is over. We must do things differently.”
[---8<---]
“When Uganda allowed refugees to work, the country's GDP increased by nearly a billion dollars,” Oyler said. “Ethiopia reformed its policies, and now thousands of refugees contribute in key sectors like agriculture and manufacturing.”

“When Rwanda, the country where I live, included refugees in its national ID program, they gained access to health care, financial services, and are growing an economy.”

It's all about knitting people into society as fast as possible. Make sure they have access to survival needs such as food, shelter, clothing, and health care. Then compare what they can do with what needs doing. To accommodate untrained workers, list your top 10 or so fields with a desperate shortage of workers, then offer free training for anyone who wishes to enter those fields.

Under the circumstances, I had different weird dreams than I would have expected: writing a poem, watching some incredibly threadbare film noir with no waking equivalent, hearing a performance from a musical theater star ditto. I am beginning to think the pop culture of my dreams actually is the hell of a good video store next door, leavened in the last few nights by dreams of re-reading real-life authors currently in storage like P.C. Hodgell or Joan D. Vinge. I remain physically fried, news at nowhen. At least the rain seems to have kept off the neighborly leafblowing which perforated so much of yesterday. The news continues to feel like stupidly lethal cosplay, which I remember from the last round of this administration, which doesn't make me hate it less.

Birdfeeding

Today is partly sunny and mild.

I fed the birds.  I haven't seen much activity yet.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 6/10/25 -- I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches, a male cardinal, and at least one mourning dove.

EDIT 6/10/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

I heard a blue jay screaming but didn't see it.

EDIT 6/10/25 -- I've been outside a couple of times to walk around the yard.  Fireflies are starting to come out, but it's still so light that they're hard to see.  I may try again later. I've seen a bat over the south lot, and a skunk on the patio.

Farmers are creating a brighter future for Bolivia’s red-fronted macaws

Once rural landowners learned they could generate income by protecting macaws, the endangered birds went from burdens to boons.

I just want to sleeppppppp

I'm exhausted tonight and just want to go to bed early, but I prefer to wait up for Shannon. I might not be able to make it tonight, though. I might just have to admit defeat and go to bed early. It's only 9 and I feel like I'm about to fall face-first into the nearest soft surface. I'm not entirely sure why I'm so tired, but I do remember that I didn't sleep very well last night, so maybe that's why.

I finished re-reading Howl's Moving Castle this morning, so I've been continuing reading All the Beauty in the World (non-fiction) and am planning to start a magical realism novel called Folklorn tonight. I might be too tired to start a new book, though. The ending of Howl's Moving Castle was more rushed than I remembered, but the book was still very good. Much better than the movie, even though I loved the movie, too. I haven't watched any Hayao Miyazaki films in a long time ... maybe I should. I always love them. I'll bet many of them are available on various streaming services now. I remember when it was almost impossible to get your hands on most of his movies! Ah, how the media times have changed! The same used to be true of Jackie Chan's movies ... I wonder if those are all available now, too. Maybe with better subtitles than they used to have.

Two more BTS members were discharged from the military today, so that makes four of them who are finished with their mandatory military service. Only three left, and I believe two more are being discharged tomorrow. The last one has to serve a bit longer because he is doing some kind of civilian work, due to a bum shoulder that rendered him unfit for normal military duty. But by the end of this month, all seven will be free again! It's very exciting for BTS fans (armys). Two of the members, in particular—the most sensitive souls, perhaps—seem to have found military life very difficult. One was discharged today, and he literally skipped with joy. The other is being discharged tomorrow. It's unlikely that there will be new music right away, but a tour in 2026 seems very likely. It's going to be a bloodbath trying to get tickets, but I'll do my best!

I haven't been studying Korean much lately, and I've now dropped out of one of my clubs/classes because it would make things to stressful on Fridays if I'm going to go to the YMCA for the water exercise class. Getting my knee healthy is the most important thing to me, so some of my Korean studies will have to be set aside.

Today I started making liquid fertilizer from Russian comfrey. This plant fills a lot of guild roles in permaculture including fertilizer, miner, mulcher, protector, attractor. I have been using it primarily as a bee plant that I can also slash-and-drop several times a season. I grow it under many of my trees and there's some in the prairie garden too.

There are various ways to make liquid fertilizer from comfrey. I will be testing two: 1) a small amount of comfrey leaves in a large amount of water, and 2) only comfrey leaves crammed tightly in a jug. (See Part 2: Leaves.)

Krakencoder predicts brain function 20x better than past methods

Scientists at Weill Cornell Medicine have developed a new algorithm, the Krakencoder, that merges multiple types of brain imaging data to better understand how the brain s wiring underpins behavior, thought, and recovery after injury. This cutting-edge tool can predict brain function from structure with unprecedented accuracy 20 times better than past models and even estimate traits like age, sex, and cognitive ability.

That ... sounds pretty exactly like something over in Terramagne. It's part of Thalassia's health care system, although they've had theirs for a while. *ponder* I think the ~20 year gap between here and there is holding steady.

New evidence reveals advanced maritime technology in the philippines 35,000 years ago

In a bold reimagining of Southeast Asia s prehistory, scientists reveal that the Philippine island of Mindoro was a hub of human innovation and migration as far back as 35,000 years ago. Advanced tools, deep-sea fishing capabilities, and early burial customs show that early humans here weren t isolated they were maritime pioneers shaping a wide-reaching network across the region.
